According to data from a study by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) that was conducted at Washington University, women that are coping with alcoholism report a greater number of problems with both physical and social functioning, more bodily pain, and poorer physical and mental health than men.
Men are more likely than women to take risks (e.g., drive fast or without a safety belt), when combined with excessive drinking, further increasing their risk of injury or death.
In one study, HIV positive women receiving antiretroviral therapy who consumed alcohol moderately or heavily were more likely to have higher levels of the HIV virus, making it easier for them to spread the virus to others.
According to a 1995 survey of fourth through sixth graders, less than a third (30%) learned about the dangers of drinking and smoking at school.
