- Excessive alcohol use has immediate effects that increase the risk of many harmful health conditions. These immediate effects are most often the result of binge drinking and include the following: Violence, including intimate partner violence and child maltreatment. About 35% of victims report that offenders are under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol use is also associated with 2 out of 3 incidents of intimate partner violence. Studies have also shown that alcohol is a leading factor in child maltreatment and neglect cases, and is the most frequent substance abused among these parents.
- Although alcoholism can be treated and long-term sobriety obtained, the recovered person must realize that they do not have the ability to control their alcohol intake after completing treatment. In other words, even if an alcoholic has been sober for a long time and has regained health, he or she remains susceptible to relapse and must continue to avoid all alcoholic beverages. "Cutting down" on drinking doesn't work; cutting out alcohol is necessary for a successful recovery.
- Among individuals with severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea, alcohol consumption at a rate of two or more drinks per day is associated with a fivefold increased risk for fatigue-related traffic crashes.
- When a person has a blood alcohol level of 0.36% or above, they could be in danger of overdosing; the person would, in most instances, have to drink anywhere from 13-19 drinks in a rather brief period of time for an overdose to occur.
