"Social use" of alcohol consists of an occasional drink in the company of friends: a glass of champagne at a wedding, a cold beer after a softball game, or a glass of fine wine with a meal; social drinking has not been shown to kill brain cells, nor is there any research that indicates that occasionally having an alcoholic beverage adversely affects any major body organ.
Moderate use (2-3 drinks) can also result in depleted aerobic capacity and negative impact on endurance for up to 48 hours after the last drink has been consumed.
Alcohol use disorders cost $56.7 billion more than the estimated annual economic cost of illegal drug use and $36.5 billion more than the estimated annual economic cost of smoking.
Studies have shown that individuals in alcohol treatment programs are less likely to engage in risky sexual behavior or to inject drugs or share needles, behaviors that greatly increase the spread of the infection HIV and other diseases. Thus, alcohol treatment itself can help prevent risky behaviors.
