In 2009, the Monitoring the Future Survey reported that 37% of 8th graders and 72% of 12th graders had tried alcohol, and 15% of 8th graders and 44% of 12th graders drank during the past month.
Evidence exists that Hispanics tend to consume alcohol in higher quantities per drinking episode than do Whites, resulting in a higher cumulative dose of alcohol.
When youth between the ages of 12 and 20 consume alcohol, they drink an estimated five drinks per occasion about six times a month.
Hispanics are approximately twice as likely as Whites to die from cirrhosis, despite a lower prevalence of moderate to heavy alcohol consumption.
