An estimated 5,000 people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage alcohol drinking each year. This includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, and hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drowning.
According to government research, alcohol is responsible for over 5% of the diseases in the United States, contributing to more than 60 different medical conditions; tobacco is responsible for 4.1% and high blood pressure is responsible for 4.4%.
Individuals with more muscle are less affected by alcohol because the muscle contains water that absorbs the alcohol from the bloodstream.
Research suggests that all pregnant women should be screened for alcohol use during prenatal visits. Women who are positive for alcohol, or prove to be at-risk, should be identified early by physicians and referred for counseling and treatment.
