  • An estimated 5,000 people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage alcohol drinking each year. This includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, and hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drowning.
  • According to government research, alcohol is responsible for over 5% of the diseases in the United States, contributing to more than 60 different medical conditions; tobacco is responsible for 4.1% and high blood pressure is responsible for 4.4%.
  • Individuals with more muscle are less affected by alcohol because the muscle contains water that absorbs the alcohol from the bloodstream.
  • Research suggests that all pregnant women should be screened for alcohol use during prenatal visits. Women who are positive for alcohol, or prove to be at-risk, should be identified early by physicians and referred for counseling and treatment.
