- Much research that is related to alcohol has consistently indicated that the long-term use of high amounts of alcohol is known to damage brain cells; it is not yet clear whether alcohol abuse (as in binge drinking0 over the short term can permanently damage nerve cell neurotransmitter receptors.
- Excessive alcohol use has immediate effects that increase the risk of many harmful health conditions. These immediate effects are most often the result of binge drinking and include the following: Unintentional injuries, including traffic injuries, falls, drownings, burns, and unintentional firearm injuries.
- There are approximately 1.5 billion episodes of binge drinking among persons aged 18 years or older in the United States annually, most of which involve adults age 26 years and older.
- Between 1993 and 2001, the proportion of students who "drink to get drunk" rose by 21%.
